The first thing I noted was the exceptionally light 4.0-pound heft—significantly easier for smaller shooters to manage than the 7.5-pound weight of a scoped trainer rifle. The bolt throw measured exactly 2.5 inches with a consistent 8-pound pull weight, making it manageable even for younger shooters developing proper mechanics. Direct comparison with the Stevens 334 rifle platform reveals a clear division of purpose. The RB22's 10.5-inch length of pull is 2 inches shorter than the Stevens' standard pull, making it objectively better for shooters under 5'4" in height. Where the Stevens 334 in .308 Winchester delivers centerfire power and aftermarket support, the RB22 provides specialized ergonomics for new shooters at one-third the ammunition cost for training sessions. The surprise limitation was in the magazine system. While functional, the proprietary 5-round design lacks the aftermarket support of the Ruger 10/22 platform, meaning spare magazines cost $22 each and have limited availability. I encountered a single feeding issue during rapid-fire exercises that traced back to magazine spring tension—something that wouldn't occur with more established magazine designs. Buy this if you need a dedicated youth trainer, a compact suppressor host for .22 LR, or a lightweight small-game rifle under $200. Skip it if you want extensive aftermarket customization, higher magazine capacity, or a rifle that will transition to adult-sized shooters without modification. For the price point and intended purpose, the RB22 Compact delivers specialized value where most rifles offer compromise.
