Fitting a premium wood set to an AK (including Ironwood Designs)
A wood set changes how an AK feels more than any other part you can bolt on — and unlike most parts, it rarely fits perfectly out of the box. Here is what fitting one actually involves, and why we do it on the bench rather than shipping a box of wood with a rifle.
What a set includes
A full set is a buttstock, a lower handguard and an upper handguard. Premium makers — Ironwood Designs among them — supply these in figured hardwoods with proper finishing, which is why they cost several times what a surplus set does.
Why fitting is needed
AK patterns vary between factories and between stamped and milled receivers. Handguard length, retainer geometry and stock tang dimensions all move slightly. A set cut to one pattern may sit proud, bind against the gas tube, or leave a visible gap at the receiver on another.
Fitting means taking material off in the right places, in small amounts, until the wood sits flush and tight with no stress on it — then confirming the gas tube latches correctly and nothing rubs the handguard retainer. Done properly, the rifle looks like the wood grew there.
Wood on a milled rifle
Heavier wood suits a milled receiver particularly well. The rifle is already nose-heavy and planted, and a thick set adds to that steady feel. On a light stamped rifle, a heavy set changes the balance noticeably — worth knowing before you choose.
Looking after it
- Keep oil off the wood where you can; solvents can lift a finish over time.
- Wipe the set down after wet days rather than leaving it in a closed case damp.
- Small dings in a working rifle's wood are character. Deep gouges can be steamed and refinished.
