Gun Kote on an AK: what the finish does and how to look after it
The metal on the rifles we build is finished in Gun Kote. It is a baked-on coating rather than a chemical conversion of the steel like traditional bluing, and it behaves differently in use.
Bluing vs a baked-on finish
Bluing is a controlled layer of oxide on the steel surface. It looks right on a classic rifle and it is thin enough to change nothing about fit, but it offers little protection on its own — a blued gun depends on the oil film over it. Sweat left on a blued receiver overnight can leave a permanent print.
Gun Kote is sprayed and then cured with heat, which leaves a hard, thin film bonded to the metal. It shrugs off handling, sweat and weather far better, and it does not need a constant oil film to survive.
Why we use it on AK builds
An AK is a rifle people use hard. It gets carried, set down on tailgates, shot with ammunition that leaves corrosive salts, and cleaned with water. A cured coating suits that life better than a finish that relies on the owner's diligence. It also gives a build a consistent colour across parts that started out from different sources — receiver, barrel, gas tube and small parts all come out matching.
Looking after a Gun Kote finish
- Clean with normal solvents. Gun Kote tolerates the usual bore cleaners and CLPs.
- Avoid aggressive paint strippers, acetone soaks and abrasive pads — those attack any coating.
- You still oil the moving parts and the bore. The coating protects the surface, not the mechanism.
- Expect honest wear. High-contact edges will eventually show shine. That is normal on a working rifle, and it can be recoated later.
Colour
Because it is sprayed, Gun Kote comes in more than black. On a custom order you can specify the colour — which is the point at which most people start thinking about how it sits against the wood. Talk to us about a build if you have a combination in mind.
