Chrome-lined AK barrels: what the lining actually does
Every rifle we build leaves here with a chrome-lined barrel. It is not a marketing line — it is a decision about how long the bore survives the ammunition people actually feed an AK.
What chrome lining is
After the barrel is rifled, a thin layer of hard chrome is electroplated into the bore. The rifling shape is preserved, but the surface the bullet and the burning powder touch is chrome instead of bare steel.
Why it matters on this platform
Two things eat barrels: heat and corrosion. Chrome resists both. It also matters because a great deal of surplus and imported 7.62×39 has been corrosively primed. Corrosive primers leave salts in the bore that pull moisture out of the air and start rusting the same day if the rifle is not cleaned. A chrome-lined bore gives you a margin — it does not make cleaning optional, it makes a missed cleaning survivable.
The third benefit is simply time: chrome is harder than the steel underneath, so throat erosion comes slower and the rifle holds its accuracy over more rounds.
What it does not do
Chrome lining will not turn a loose barrel into a match barrel. If a rifle shoots poorly, the cause is usually the crown, the headspace, the sights or the ammunition — not the presence or absence of chrome. Plated bores can also mask a rough underlying finish, which is why the barrel matters more than the lining that went into it.
How we fit one
The barrel is pressed into the front trunnion and pinned, then headspace is checked with go and no-go gauges before the build continues. Headspace is the gap that decides whether the cartridge is supported correctly when it fires; it is checked on every rifle we assemble, on both stamped and milled receivers, and it is the single check we will not ship a rifle without.
Cleaning a chrome bore after corrosive ammunition
- Flush the bore and the gas system with hot soapy water or a water-based solvent the same day you shoot. Water dissolves the salts; solvent alone often does not.
- Dry thoroughly, including the gas tube and piston.
- Run a light oil through the bore and wipe the exterior.
